Abbots Green reach another Suffolk County Finals
The girls from Abbots Green arrived in good spirits and looking forward to the challenge ahead. After a downpour of rain, the teams were brought in for the team meetings. Abbots Green A team went head to head with Horringer with a place in the Suffolk County Finals up for grabs.
The girls played 50 minutes and for the first 10 minuets it was an even contest. Poppy had gone close with a fine strike at one end with Evie making a brilliant save to keep the scores level. The deadlock was broken after a defensive mistake was punished by Jessica. She showed great composure to finish from a difficult angle. Abbots Green were soon pegged back when the Horringer striker finished smartly to level the score. Half time was fast approaching when Gracie placed the ball down for a goal kick. She decided to shoot and from 30 yards out watched as the ball sailed into goal.
After a quick team talk the girls were back out in their formation. The brilliant duo of Lexie and Megan keep the Horringer strikers quiet and the constant running from Elisabeth and Gabriele caused them problems at the other end. The girls started playing some lovely football with Maisie at the heart of it. They scored two great goals through Gracie. Abbots Green went into a 5-1 lead when again the impressive Jessica scored into the top corner. With time running out Horringer scored a late consolation goal to bring the final score 5-2.

Abbots Green faced Sebert Wood in the next camp which proved to be their biggest challenge. It was an end to end match which looked like it would end goalless before Samuel popped up with a fine solo goal. This was quickly followed by another thunderbolt to put Abbots Green in pole position. Gabriele and Joshua played some lovely passes from midfield. Sebert Wood pulled a goal back with minutes to spare but it was too late and Abbots Green held on for victory.
The last game was against Guildhall Feoffment. It was a very one-sided game with Abbots Green putting pressure on and going close on many occasions. The game finished 0-0 and with that secured the top spot in the league table.

Abbots Green roar to victory in the Bury St Edmunds Cross Country Qualifiers
On Thursday 29th September 36 children from Abbots Green travelled the short distance to Howard Primary Academy for the Bury St Edmunds Cross Country qualifiers. After a quick tactics meeting the children focused on warming up for the mile run. A lot of the children were nervous as it was the first time any of them had competed at a cross country but the nerves soon faded away when the starting whistle blew.
Year 5 boys were first up. The race set off at a fast pace and soon all the boys were in the distance following the course directions. Oliver H was placed in 3rd position coming into the final bend. What happened next was a great individual piece of running brilliance. He sprinted towards the finish line being cheered on by his team mates and after a straight head to head crossed the line first to secure the win for himself and Abbots Green. Max (4th), Joshua(6th) and Leo(8th) all finished inside the top 10 respectfully after fine running performances also.
The Year 5 girls were up next. From start to finish this was the Isabelle and Abbie show. They both run a brilliant race pushing each other every step of the way. Not to be outdone by the Year 5 sprint finish the girls battled for top spot over the last 100 meters. Isabelle crossed the finish line just before Abbie to bring home the Abbots Green 1st and 2nd place. Again, we had fine individual runs from Jessica P (8th), Tia (9th) and Florence (10th) to finish inside the top 10.
Year 6 boys followed and after a blistering start Tom was leading the pack for long periods of the race. Tom qualified last year and was hoping to progress again this year. He was under pressure going into the last 100 meters and he was eventually piped to the line by a child from another school. A fantastic performance and great achievement to qualify two years in a row. All the boys finished the race with a smile to bring home valuable points for Abbots Green.
Finally, Year 6 girls had their turn. They all lined up on the start line ready for the starting whistle. Gabriele found herself at the front of the pack in the early stages of the race and once again went into a sprint finish with a child from another school. She finished in 2nd place to qualify after producing a near perfect race. India wanted to get in on the action and after a fantastic last half of the race produced a sprint finish to cross the line in 4th place also qualifying for the next round.
All the children represented Abbots Green in such a positive way during the whole morning. From giving their all on the course to cheering on their team. It’s with that teamwork and resilience that Abbots Green won both the girls and boys team events on the day with all of them contributing to the victory.

Team B lost their second game by 1-0 against Barrow but had some bright spells in the game. Aiden and Oscar caused the opposition problems but the boys couldn’t make the breakthrough.
The 3rd game Abbots Green B team needed to win if they wanted to finish in the top 3 positions. It was a close encounter against Westley B. After a fine solo goal from Stefan the boys defended heroically to gain the win to take them to the 3rd place playoff.
The boys entered the last game knowing a win would secure them the 3rd spot overall. After an early scare the boys produced a fantastic team performance. Freddie caused problems throughout and scored his goal he deserved from the penalty spot. That boy again, Stefan who popped up at the back post with a fine bullet header from a Freddie corner.
Team A
Team A had their first game and the boys were slow out of the blocks allowing Sebert Wood to score 2 good team goals. After a quick team talk the boys grew into the game and played some great football.
After that they boys went on a great run winning all 3 of their remaining games without conceding a goal. This was down to a wonderful defensive duo of Harry and Joshua. They were backed up by the alert and impressive Sam in goal. With a solid defence it allowed the offensive players to move the ball quicker and create more in the final 3rd. The boys scored some impressive team goals and also some wonderful solo play which we will be looking to work on before the Suffolk Finals later on in the school year.
