At Abbots Green, in Years 1-6, we follow the White Rose curriculum alongside a maths mastery approach. The philosophy of maths mastery is centred around helping the children to achieve a deep, long-term and secure understanding of the subject. Our children can then apply this understanding to problems that help them to reason about number. These skills are transferable to everyday situations where maths is seen as an integral part of life. At Abbots Green, we believe that success in mathematics for every child is possible and that mathematical ability is not innate, and is increased through effort. We recognise that pupils need to develop their conceptual understanding so that they can apply their knowledge in a range of contexts, including the development of problem solving and reasoning skills.

Aims of the Maths Curriculum

In line with the National Curriculum Objectives for Mathematics, our intent is that all pupils:

• Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
• Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
• Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

Across Nursery and Reception, we use the Early Years Foundation Stage Early Learning Goals to plan our curriculum. This recognises the importance of early experiences of maths and our approach places a significant emphasis on developing a strong grounding in number – understanding that this is a necessary building block for children to excel in the subject.
